DVD has many advantages over other media, including, videotape, print, CD-ROM, and the internet. Even in the case of CD-ROM multimedia, the capacity of DVD to carry large amounts of full screen video makes it more compelling, more effective, and more entertaining. DVD-Video is an excellent sales and presentation tool. Imagine a complete sales presentation system contained on a single DVD disc. Business sales presentations can be greatly enhanced by professional video supplements provided on DVD. Product catalogs with thousands of photographs and video vignettes can be put on a single disc for a fraction of the cost of printed catalogs.

Low Cost. Production and replication costs of DVD-Video and DVD-ROM are below the cost of videotape and slightly more than CD-ROM especially when cost calculations take the larger capacity into account.

Simple, inexpensive, reliable distribution. Five inch discs are easier and cheaper to mail than tapes or books. Optical discs are not susceptible to damage from magnetic fields, X-rays, or even cosmic rays, which damage tapes or magnetic discs in transit.

Merged Media. DVD bridges the gap between many different information sources. A single disc can contain all the information normally provided by such disparate sources as videotapes, newspapers, computer databases, audio tapes, printed directories, and information kiosks. Training videos can be accompanied with printable manuals, product demonstrations can include spec sheets and order forms, databases can include Internet links for updated information, product catalogs can include video demonstrations, and so on.

High capacity. A double sided, dual layer DVD-Video disc can hold over 8 hours of video, and over 28 if compressed at videotape quality. Many hours of video and hundreds of gigabytes can be sent anywhere in the world by slipping a few discs in an overnight mailer.

Self-contained ease of use. DVD-ROM programs can obvious include integrated instruction. The Features of DVD-Video are also sufficient to provide instruction, tutorials, and pop-up help. A disc can start with a menu of programs, how-to sections, and background information. Rather than being tied to a linear taped presentation, the viewer can select appropriate material, instantly repeat any piece, or jump from section to section.

Portability. Video presentations no longer require a VCR. Portable DVD-Video players and laptop computers with DVD-ROM drives with audio/video decoding abilities move presentations to virtually anywhere.

Ease of Use. The limited interface is simple to learn and is usually accessible using a remote control.

Ubiquity. DVD-Video and DVD-ROM are beginning to take place of VCRs and businesses have a least one computer with a DVD-ROM drive installed.

Larger audience and no cross-platform worries. Macintosh computers, Windows computers, Linux computers, workstations, DVD players, and even video game consoles can all play standard DVD-Video discs. Computers with Internet connections can access addition web content via embeded web links.*
